Hosta season is in full swing now in May. Shipping many hosta plants now as May is our busiest month. A lot of interest in miniature hostas.

Much planting going on here since we took out 40+ pine trees. Have dug shade plants and many hostas where there used to be pine shade. Planted back hardwood trees this winter and many viburnums, hydrangea, itea, illicium, ilex, cornus, roses, abelia, azaleas, cephalotaxus, other conifers etc.

Hosta Seaon Begins
After surviving last weeks late freeze and covering plants with frost cloth for 2 days and uncovering for 1 day we are now ready to ship. But.... thunderstorms and high winds delayed me yesterday. Still rain this am but will try to get 1st orders shipped today. Non stop now until mid June when things usually slow up. Still need to move mini hosta out of garage.

Hosta Freeze?
Covering hostas with frost cloth in 35 MPH winds today. Expecting lows in the mid to high 20's Tues night. Will move the miniature hostas in containers from patio to garage. It seems this happens every year.

Fertilizing Hostas - Spring Care of Hostas

To begin the gardening year we all need to think about some late winter clean up first.
I like to remove all of last years old hosta leaf debris and bloom scapes before fertilizing.
Hostas feed in a different way than most perennials plants. The hosta plant uses most of its food during Spring green up or flush. Some people want to come back and fertilize during mid summer but the experts say that this is a waste.
As far as fertilizer type, I like to use what I use in the nursery, a slow release nitrogen fertilizer.
The numbers are 12-6-6 with 3-4 month release. These fertilzers tend not to burn if you over do it. This is just what I use and you can probably use almost any fertilizer if you wish.
I like to scratch the soid surface after application too if possible.
